Private Home, Bergen aan Zee
A comprehensive renovation of a private residence in Bergen aan Zee, uniquely positioned between protected dune landscape and the North Sea coastline. The project combines sustainability, bespoke interiors and art within a powerful natural setting.

Location and Landscape The house occupies a unique position between two contrasting yet complementary landscapes. On one side lies an extensive dune reserve of more than 100 hectares, home to wild European bison.
On the other, the open coastline of Bergen aan Zee stretches toward the North Sea. The renovation was guided by this dual orientation, with views, light and spatial flow carefully aligned to the surrounding nature. Sustainable Renovation
The renovation focused on making the house significantly more eco-friendly. Building systems, insulation and material choices were upgraded to improve energy efficiency and long-term sustainability, while maintaining a calm and natural architectural expression.
All interior spaces were reworked to create clarity, comfort and a strong relationship with the landscape. Kitchen and Living Spaces At the heart of the home is a bespoke kitchen designed specifically for this project. Crafted from oak and travertine, the kitchen combines warmth and solidity, functioning as both a practical workspace and a central gathering point. Material choices were guided by durability, tactility and their ability to age gracefully over time.
Living spaces open toward the landscape, with large windows and terraces creating a seamless transition between inside and outside. Bedrooms and Bathrooms The bathrooms were designed as serene, light-filled spaces with direct views onto the dunes. Natural materials and restrained detailing reinforce a sense of calm and continuity with the surroundings.
The master bedroom enjoys panoramic views across both the dune landscape and the sea, turning the changing light, weather and seasons into an integral part of daily life within the home. Exterior Spaces and Art The property includes a generous terrace and a large garage, supporting both everyday living and hosting.
The garden forms an extension of the architectural concept and includes outdoor artworks by Joep van Lieshout and Maarten Baas. These works introduce a cultural layer to the landscape, positioning art as an active presence rather than a decorative addition.
Result The renovated house in Bergen aan Zee is a carefully balanced composition of architecture, nature, sustainability and art. It offers a contemporary living environment that responds directly to its exceptional location while remaining understated, robust and deeply connected to its surroundings.
